NHS Prescriptions And Dental Charges Rise

Simon Burns, yesterday, outlined price rises in the cost of NHS prescriptions and dental charges in England.  Prescription charges will rise by 25p to £7.65 and by 50p to £17.50, with rises of up to £5 for more complex work.

Chief Regulator Quits

Cynthia Bower, chief executive of the Care Quality Commission, yesterday resigned after growing criticism that the organisation was not fit for purpose.

NHS May Need Emergency Cash Bailout

Ministers fear that the NHS could require an emergency cash bailout before the next general election to enable it to cope with escalating demands of an ageing population.

George Osborne has promised a real-terms increase in health spending over the next four years.  Mr Osborne and Mr Lansley are calling for £20bn of efficiency savings in the health service over the same period, without cuts being made to patient services.  One minister conceded yesterday that the combination of factors was likely to mean the NHS would need more money before the election, which is expected in 2015.

Clegg May Seek More Concessions To Head Off Health Bill Revolt

Deputy PM, Nick Clegg, today made clear that he wanted further changes to the Health and Social Care Bill by refusing to support the package ‘100 per cent’.

The Deputy PM’s stance follows disclosure that no one Liberal Democrat turned up to Downing Street summit, hosted by David Cameron on Monday, to sell the health legislation to health professionals and patients.

Miliband Claims Scrapping Reforms Could Save 6,000 Nursing Jobs

Ed Miliband has claimed that the total number of nurses working within the NHS has been cut by 3,500 since the general election and could fall by 2,500 by the end of this Parliament.

NHS Alliance/NAPC Clinical Commissioning Coalition’s response to NHS Commissioning Board update.


In the Department of Health’s original guidance Developing the NHS Commissioning Board (July 2011), Sir David Nicholson said: "CCGs will be the engine of the new system and things will only be done at a different level of the system where there is evidence that this produces better results."

Fast forward a few months and the Government’s document Design of the NHS Commissioning Board, released on 2 February, seems to be telling a completely different story. What we see are layers of bureaucracy and management, with complex guidelines. The old ‘footprint’, i.e. 50 local offices, remains there, plus four sector outposts, all using a single operating model.
